How Your Ethical Coffee Subscription Makes a Difference To The Environment

You’ve probably heard of ethical coffee subscriptions and how they impact the environment. However, the term ‘ethical coffee subscription’ is rather vague, so we’ll be breaking down what it means and how choosing specialty coffee contributes to the greater good of the planet.

What Is Speciality Coffee?

Speciality coffee is a term used for coffee beans that score over 80 points on a 100 points scale during the cupping process (when it gets tasted, graded and eventually recognised as speciality).

They are grown in optimal weather conditions, often at high altitudes, in the shade and on rich-mineral soil using eco-friendly farming practices. The coffee cherries are handpicked when they are ripe, and carefully selected and meticulously processed to highlight the natural flavour of the coffee beans which often give your coffee cup tasting notes such as citrus, jasmine, pecan and many others.

How Does Speciality Coffee Positively Impact The Environment?

As previously discussed, speciality coffee is grown at high altitudes, in the shade using eco-friendly farming practices:

  1. High altitudes means lower temperatures which also means an environment less suitable for pests and fungi, which means the farmers don’t need to resort to chemical solutions to maintain the crop
  2. The beans growing slowly in the shade means that the beans develop natural sugars and complexity. Because they develop so beautifully, there is no need for fertilizers, resulting in healthier soil and cleaner waterways. Oh, and let’s not forget  this means a delicious cup of coffee for you.
  3. Using shade to grow the coffee plants prevents deforestation and promotes biodiversity, leading to cleaner air and healthier ecosystems. Coffee trees protect the forest, while the forest protects the coffee.

We pride ourselves in having developed relationships with some farmers and with purchasing directly from them. This ensures they are paid fairly for their work and can maintain sustainable farming practices and that we have full traceability of the coffee beans.

Over a year ago we introduced the new beautiful packaging for the coffee bags that is 100% recyclable and made from recycled materials.

Using recyclable materials prevents the bags ending up in landfill and contaminating the soil with harmful chemicals and threatening the wildlife.

Another benefit of a recyclable bag is getting more use out of the same materials, reducing the need to over produce more new packaging, and in turn lowering the carbon emissions associated with manufacturing.

So Why Get A Coffee Subscription?

Besides the more obvious benefits like never running out of coffee and saving 25% on every subscription order?

Your coffee-drinking habit could directly impact the livelihood of the farmers, prevent deforestation and pollution. A coffee subscription literally allows you to change the world, one cup of coffee at a time.
